According to the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index (GDCI) Thailand is in the top 20 global destination to visit.

The Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index had ranked Bangkok as the number one global destination for overnight visitors whether it’ll be tourist or businessmen, it is a must visit. This year is the fifth time since 2012 that the capital of Thailand, Bangkok has landed on the first spot on this ranking, and for it’s third consecutive years. Bangkok had also knocked London out of the first place in it’s second consecutive year for having the most international overnight visitors with Bangkok having 20 million in past year while London had 19.8 million visitors.

In southern Thailand, Phuket is also making waves as being the first to break the top 10 destination by money rate spent. This means that Phuket is currently on the 12th place meanwhile Pattaya is catching up on the 18th spot. It has been reported that our main incomers in the tourism aspect is still of course Japan, China and South Korea.

Donald Ong, Mastercard’s Thailand and Myanmar chief also pointed out that it is important that Thailand is the only country to have three destinations ranked in the top 20 further stating, “–the importance of robust infrastructure, a good mix of business and leisure attractions and the unique culture that Thailand is renowned for. We recognize the efforts of government agencies, including the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), as important factors in maintaining above-average growth in the tourism sector.”

Thailand have hosted numerous international events in the past year and the Thai government has made and expansion for short-stay tourists and implemented special immigration checkpoints for Chinese tourists. These key points along with the fact that the capital of Thailand is cheaper and seen more affordable than other big name capitals such as Paris, London, Singapore etc. makes it a factor that it is ranked as the number one destination.
